HAUPPAUGE, NY –(January 3, 2008)- Step outside and enjoy the winter season on Long Island, NY where fun-filled outdoor activities await. Thousands of acres of parkland await cross-country skiers and many Long Island parks welcome sledders to their hills. Put on a pair of skates and experience ice skating indoors and outdoors, or welcome Long Island’s visiting winter wildlife population, including its winter seals, through organized excursions by area research and educational foundations.

Or, why not book a room at an area hotel and take a mid-winter family retreat. Many area hotels have indoor pools and other amenities. Or visit one of Long Island’s own public indoor pools for a day of fun.

Make certain to get out to the east end of Long Island Feb. 8 to Mar. 9, when Suffolk County businesses and vineyards team up for Winterfest 2008. A series of free jazz concerts are scheduled every weekend at area vineyards, and local hotels, B&Bs, restaurants, limo companies and others are offer special events, promotions, packages and discounts. Visit www.liwinterfest.com

You don’t have to travel across the country for cross country skiing. Breathe in the crisp air skiing past timberland forests, streams, historic homes, and monuments along the way. Most parks on the island provide cross country skiing such as Bethpage State Park, Camp Hero in Montauk, Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, Montauk State Park, Heckscher State Park, Muttontown Preserve, and many others. All Suffolk County-owned parks are open for cross-country skiing, as are most Nassau County parks.

Sledding the hills of Long Island is another great winter past time on Long Island. Bring a friend or family member and make it a day to remember. Take a sled ride though Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale; Cedar Creek Park in Seaford; Christopher Morley Park in Roslyn-North Hills; Eisenhower Park Field #1 in East Meadow; and Grant Park in Hewlett.

The great outdoors hold many wonders for nature and animal lovers alike. People are not the only ones who love the great outdoors of Long Island; seals come up to play along the coast every year. Come join the Coastal Research and Education Society of Long Island or the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation and go on a walk or cruise to see some of these special creatures. Reservations are recommended to enjoy this unique and extraordinary day with nature. Never approach these creatures alone.

Outdoor ice skating rinks are situated in area parks and include Christopher Morley Park in Roslyn-North Hills; Grant Park  in Hewlett; Bethpage Community Park in Bethpage; Marjorie Post-Massapequa Park in Massapequa; Syosset-Woodbury Park in Syosset; The Rink at Reckson Plaza in Uniondale; and Bushkill Winter Club in East Hampton. Port Jefferson and Greenport ice rinks are in village parks near the harbors.
For those who prefer indoor rinks, many are available from Iceland in New Hyde Park, Superior Ice Rink in Kings Park, Huntington Town Indoor Rink in Dix Hills, Long Beach Ice Area in Long Beach, and several others.

Then warm up with a cup of hot cocoa in any one of Long Island’s hotels or bed and breakfast. Warm up close to a fireplace and choose where you want to venture next on the island, from unique historical homes, antiquing, museums, wineries, shopping and more.
