HAUPPAUGE, NY -(November 12, 2007)- The Long Island Conventions and Visitors Bureau and Sports Commission (LICVB&SC) and the Nassau County Aquatic Center are proud to welcome the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) 2007 Division III Men and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships  on November 30 though December 2, 2007.

“We are privileged that the ECAC has chosen to return to Long Island for the third consecutive year. Long Island is home to some of the best sports facilities in the country, and the Nassau County Aquatic Center is among the finest of its kind,” said Regina Zara, Director of Sales and Sports Development for the LICVB&SC.

There will be over 350 swimmers and divers in attendance at this competition, participating in various events.

“The Long Island area and in particular the Nassau County Aquatic Center in Eisenhower Park is a perfect location and the wide choice of hotels, restaurants and free time activities from which to choose is truly impressive,” said Gothard Lane, Director of Championships from the Eastern College Athletic Conference states. “I cannot imagine another area in the country that has the winning combination of a world class facility and everything that the Long Island area has to offer to a competitive team, its athletes and its fans.”

The public is invited to attend. ECAC tickets are $10/session. For more information, visit www.ecac.org/championships

The Nassau County Aquatic has over 1,500 seats and is one of the largest indoor competitive pools in the country. The center can host national and international events in all aquatic disciplines.
Bringing these types of events to our area has significant impact on the local economy, said Deidra Clark-Towers, Deputy Commissioner of Nassau County Parks, Recreation and Museums. “The LICVB&SC has supported the facility in attracting major events to the venue, the Parks Department, and the County,” she said.

“This event alone should generate over $220,000 in economic impact over the course of the competition,” said the LICVB&SC’s Zara.

The center pool at the Aquatic Center is 50-meters with three movable bulkheads. The pool setup varies from day-to-day, with 50-meter, 25-yard and/or 25- meter lap lanes depending on the need. There is a diving well with a 10-meter competition diving tower and one- and three-meter springboard, according to Nassau County. The facility has seen numerous World, American, US Open and NCAA records set and currently holds six world records. Many collegiate conferences have held championship here because of the track record of the facility, the county’s ability to meet the events needs, the fact that it is a neutral venue and its close proximity to New York City, said Clark-Towers.

For area residents, the pool includes a shallow section that is available for recreational or free swimming. The shallow section is perfect for water exercise, therapeutic swimming and/or "water walking." The facility is open to the public for recreational and/or training purposes (Leisure Pass and fee required) and offers a full menu of swimming lessons for toddlers, youngsters and teens, as well as water exercise classes for adults.
