HAUPPAUGE, NY -(April 16, 2007)- Long Island is the place to visit to enjoy the many fragrances of spring with thousands of acres of public gardens, stunning mansions, estates and a broad range of flower shows, festivals, and tours planned.
Come learn about delicious wild edible and medicinal wild herbs, greens, flowers, and mushrooms; or celebrate Arbor Day at a festival featuring a wildlife show and tree treasure hunt; or stroll through a uniquely designed sensory garden for the physically challenged.
Make a day of it and combine a spring day outing with lunch at one of Long Island’s fine restaurants. Book a hotel with friends or family and create a “weekend getaway” that’s sure to revive your senses.
Following is a listing of public gardens on Long Island, as well as events, tours and shows:
Bayard Cutting Arboretum
690 acres in an idyllic setting along the Connetquot River, with five nature walks (pinetum, wildflower, rhododendron, bird-watchers, swamp cypress), wildflower/daffodil displays, tree collection. Estate mansion with snack bar, overlooking a great lawn sweeping down to the river.

Bailey Arboretum
42 acres, self-guided nature trail; exceptional collection of conifers, Daffodils in April, flowering trees in spring, annuals and perennials throughout the summer. Arboretum also has a sensory garden for the physically challenged.

Hofstra Arboretum
Spread across the 240-acre campus, with a pinetum and a greenway; specialized gardens include a sensory garden for the physically challenged (plants, which are at wheelchair level, can be handled, with a water element for sound), the New American Garden of easy-care perennials and ornamental grasses on the north campus. It also has a bird sanctuary with waterfall and a songbird study garden. Clark Botanic Garden
Twelve acres of living museum and education facility. Dedicated to understanding and appreciating the world’s plant life through horticulture, education and research. Collections at the garden include native spring wildflowers, conifers, roses, perennials, daylilies, wetland plants, rock garden plants, herbs, butterfly plant, medicinal plants and over a dozen collections of particular plant families.

John P. Humes Japanese Stroll Garden
This hilly woodland garden contains native and Asian plants, bamboo groves and a pond with a waterfall. Cherry blossoms appear in mid-April, Asian wildlife and azaleas bloom in May, Japanese iris in June.

Old Westbury Gardens
160 Acres, with eight formal English gardens surrounding the Charles II-style mansion, including a walled perennial garden, cottage and rose gardens. Tours, gift shop, plant sales, garden workshop and classes throughout the season.

Longhouse Reserve
Through its gallery, arboretum, sculpture gardens, and programs, Longhouse brings together art and nature aesthetics and spirit, with a strong conviction that the arts are central to living wholly and creatively. Dedicated to quality and integrity, Longhouse programs encourage a board concept of learning.

Planting Fields Arboretum
409 acres, with four and a half miles of nature trails and 150-acres of landscaped plantings, including rhododendron and azalea displays. There’s a synoptic garden, a rose garden, a main greenhouse with exotic plants year-round, a camellia greenhouse and a gift shop (with plant sale). For the Coe Hall House Museum: Guided tours are offered daily April 1 through 9/30, from 12:00 pm to 3:30 pm. $6.50 per adult $5.00 per senior and/or student $2 Children 7 to 12 years of age. Arbor Day Festival
Since 1987 Planting Fields has commemorated national Arbor Day with a festival of fun filled educational activities and entertainment. Kids of all ages can see a wildlife show, go on a tree treasure hunt or nature walk, and participate in nature activities.

Huntington Tulip Festival
Combine this Great Festival with the Sheep-to-Shawl Festival. Enjoy Tulips, Music, over 22 booths of Children's Activities, Art Exhibition, Heckscher Museum and Sheep Shearing, weaving, crafts and food. Fun time will be had by all!

A Walking Tour and Lecture
Fred Soviero, director of grounds, Hofstra University, will give a walking tour of new plantings, flora and fauna in the arboretum. The tour will be followed by a lecture presentation by Beth Levinthal, director of the Hofstra University Museum, on the subject of flowers in art. Alfred Henry Maurer's oil painting Woman in a Garden will provide the visual focus. Brown bag your lunch. A Tea with Emily will be served following the lecture.
