Event Highlights Long Island As A Top-Rate Venue For Professional Golf

HAUPPAUGE, NY- (June 27, 2005)- The Long Island Convention and Visitors Bureau and Sports Commission (LICVB&SC) is pleased to welcome the Commerce Bank Long Island Classic Golf Championship Monday, June 27 through Sunday, July 3 at the Red Course in Nassau County’s Eisenhower Park.

The event highlights Long Island and Eisenhower Park as a top level venue for professional golf, placing the spotlight on Long Island and the region's many wonderful attributes, according to organizers. The Commerce Bank Long Island Classic Golf Championship is further enhanced by a Fourth of July fireworks celebration, and week-long family friendly attractions.

The event will be televised Friday, Saturday and Sunday on The Golf Channel.
Attendees at this year’s event will have the opportunity to see some of golf’s greatest players up close and in action. This is the only Champions Tour golf tournament in New York and its right here in Nassau County. A full schedule of Champions Tour professionals are set to compete for the $1.5 million purse, according to organizers. Last year’s champion, Jim Thorpe, will return to defend his title in what is expected to be a strong player field including Craig Stadler, Hale Irwin, Gary McCord and Peter Jacobsen.

This year’s Commerce Bank Championship is also being hailed as a family destination with the addition of the “Family Fun Village.” A Family Fun Pavilion will include Long Drive Contest, Chipping Contest, Putting Contest, Game Room, Golf Ball Massage, and Broadcast Booth, giving visitors the opportunity to take a trial run at broadcasting. The Family Fun Village will also include Face Painting, Traveling Magician, Balloon Art, and Kids Tattoos. All ticket proceeds go to Schneider Children’s Hospital.
