HAUPPAUGE, NY -(June 1, 2008)- Long Island museums have a full spectrum of diverse exhibits planned this summer, ranging from a full ensemble of couture clothing to an intricate collection of origami.

Visit a Long Island museum and make a full day by adding on a stop at a nearby scenic village for lunch and shopping. Following is a listing of upcoming exhibits at some of Long island’s major museums. For a full listing of area museums and galleries, visit www.discoverlongisland.com

Nassau County Museum
Located in Roslyn Harbor, the Nassau County Museum of Art combines the dynamic imagery of a museum experience with an historic mansion.

An exciting new exhibit, Iris Apfel. Rare Bird of Fashion, runs through Sept. 18 and  features wildly beautiful couture clothing from major European and American designers such as Chanel, Dior, Armani, and other high-end designers. Outfits are assembled to flaunt styles of passion and fantasy with accessories from Africa to Southwest America and non-western countries and cultures.

Along with its unique exhibits, The Nassau County Museum of Art's permanent collection contains over 600 various works representing both 19th and 20th century European and American artists. Featured artists include Edouard Vuillard, Pierre Bonnard, Roy Lichtenstein, Larry Rivers, and others.

The Long Island Museum of Art, History & Carriages at Stony Brook.
The Eye of the Storm exhibit from June 21 to October 26 shows a devastating time in Long Island history, The Hurricane of 1938. The most violent storm to ever hit, visitors can experience the aftermath of such a force of nature though artifacts, drawings, video, and oral histories. There will be advice from the Red Cross on how to prepare for a disaster and the classifications of various storms. Along with hurricanes, the exhibition features objects from shipwrecks found in Long Island waters. Videos will allow guest to experience a shipwreck dive as if they were underwater themselves.

The nine acre Long Island Museum of Art, History & Carriages complex contains three museums with exhibits in American art, history, and the largest collection of horse-drawn carriages. There is also a Victorian miniature room and a collection of duck decoys.

The art collection contains more than 4,000 paintings, sculptures, and prints dating from the early 1800s to the present, including the largest steady collection of works by Stony Brook resident, William Sidney Mount. Country Scenes for City is his most recent exhibit on display until September 7. Mount rose to prominence during the 1930s as America’s premier genre painter with depictions of rural life in America.

Ward Melville Heritage Organization (WMHO) Cultural Center
An exhibit celebrating Coney Island will open July 11 and run through Aug. 24 at the Cultural Center in Stony Brook. Entitled Hot Dawg! Celebrating Coney Island…America’s First Amusement Park, the exhibit includes an authentic Steeplechase Horse, "Dark Cars," L.I. Cloth Dollinks “Mermaids” and “Beach Babes,” and exhibit items on display from the Paul & Nancy Brigandi Museum. The exhibit will also include Coney Island games and prizes, pitching coins, popcorn and face painting. Interestingly, the Stony Brook community has been brought in to participate in the celebration, with six area restaurants offering their own gourmet versions of Coney Island specialties.
